Wonder Set In Stone: Khodaldham Temple
Khodaldham Temple – the magnificent landmark temple at Kagvad, Rajkot is known not only for of its sheer size but also for setting a new Guinness World Record in 2017 in the category of the highest number of people singing national anthem simultaneously at a single venue. It is one of the largest comprehensive Hindu Temples in the country.
Providing a solution to a project of this magnitude wasn’t an easy feat. Such an extraordinary project required an extraordinary solution and that’s where Nuvoco Vistas Corp., suggested that the project be designed by Artiste™ Craft Concrete, a decorative concrete which is not only hard-wearing but also long-lasting.
When Shree Khodaldham Trust (SKT) came up with the idea of this temple, the obvious choice was conventional landscape product like paver blocks. But the architect of the temple Haresh Parsana recommended Artiste™ because such an esteemed project should have something unique and stunning. Artiste™ fit the bill perfectly because it is not only durable like concrete, but it would also give the landscape the desired look which is otherwise missing in pavers.
The total area was 39600 sq. ft. with large pedestrian steps and service road on either side in front of the temple. As the site was a large open area and the wind velocity was high; plastic and drying shrinkage cracks was a major concern. To avoid the wind effect, the pour location was covered with a green net. As the work continued even during the rainy season the Transit Mixer chute had to be covered to avoid rainwater mixing with concrete.
More than 2000 sq. ft. of Artiste™ work was done in a day. The temple was inaugurated with much fanfare with more than three lakh footfalls from across Gujarat, and even the rest of the country. Today, Khodaldham stands tall as the crowning glory in Rajkot’s skyline. It is an honor for Nuvoco to be associated with such a magnificent project.
