Nuvoco have been long committed to sustainable development; pursuing a strategy that combines industrial know-how with performance, value creation, respect for employees and local cultures, environmental protection, as well as conservation of natural resources and energy. Nuvoco has been able to give back to the local communities in which we operate by sustainable communities across six cement plants; thereby making difference in the lives of over 1,98,000 people residing in 103 villages across the north and east regions of India.
Our corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes fall under 5 pillars of Health (Swasth Bharat), Safety (Surakshit Bharat), Education (Sakshar Bharat), Employability (Saksham Bharat) and developing Infrastructure (Sanrachit Bharat). We consider it as our inherent responsibility to provide a safe and healthy environment for all our stakeholders; not limited only to our employees and work towards a goal of ZERO HARM.
Swasth Bharat (Health)
Through Swasth Bharat, we provide access to primary health care, improved sanitation and safe drinking water to our communities. Our cement plants dedicate a significant part of their overall CSR efforts to Health and Sanitation through a range of programmes. This year, more than 96,400 community members around our plants have benefited through our efforts.
Surakshit Bharat (Safety)
As the name implies, under Surakshit Bharat, we strive to build awareness on safety and stimulate behavioural change in the communities living in close proximity of our operating units or even associated with us. Implemented by our teams across all plant locations; the programmes cover a range of topics that include road and home safety, attention to health and risks of avoidable diseases. This year we reached out to over 23,600 people across locations through various platforms like Nukkad Natak (street plays), training and awareness camps.
Sakshar Bharat (Education)
Through Sakshar Bharat initiatives, we provide access to new age education to children in rural areas; and have touched over 7300 students. We follow a unique approach where our units partner with the state government and education authorities to improve the quality of education and infrastructure in schools. Students are provided opportunities to pursue higher education through computer training, and also receive career guidance and counselling through trained counsellors.
Saksham Bharat (Employability)
Improving livelihood by imparting new skills to the youth and women to enable them to become self-reliant is driven under Saksham Bharat. Today these programmes have matured from being just classroom sessions to linking individuals and self-help groups to income generation activities. This year more than 2,000 people benefited through our various efforts under Saksham Bharat.
Sanrachit Bharat (Infrastucture)
Sanrachit Bharat projects are geared towards improving the quality of life by developing community infrastructure where we operate. By constructing and repairing roads, providing water storage and distribution facilities, as well as refurbishing school buildings, we have been able to help approximately 68,700 people in communities and villages around our plants this year.
Ensuring continuous water
Arasmeta Cement Plant (ACP) as part of their CSR initiative carried out a plantation drive at Chorbhatti village. Total 130 fruit trees were planted during the drive. Additionally to ensure continuous water supply the team also did borewell deepening work and made available submersible pump. This initiative was appreciated by local villagers.
Anemia detection and management camp
Under Swasth Bharat initiative, Sonadih Cement Plant (SCP) organised anemia detection and management camp at Reseda village for adolescent girls. More than 70 adolescent girls from nearby villages participated. Free medicines and vitamins were provided under this camp. Yogesh Mishra from CSR team and Rajkumar Choudhary from medical team facilitated the programme.
School gets a boundary wall
Under Nuvoco’s ‘Sanrachit Bharat’ initiative Arasmeta Cement Plant (ACP) has constructed approximately 230 meters of boundary wall at Government Middle School, Arasmeta village. This initiative has received appreciation from the school authorities and local Panchayat. Safety messages and slogans have also been painted on the wall to increase the awareness of the school children and the local villagers.
Mejia Cement Plant (MCP) as part of its CSR programme organised ‘Harvest Hungama’ on Kharif crop improved cultivation practices at Barabaid village. Modern and improved techniques were demonstrated which led to improvement on yield and reduction in inputs per acre. Farmers also shared their results on how the improved method (line sowing) helped them to increase the yield and reduce the input cost of the crop. Videos shows and agricultural experts shared their expertise on different improved methods. More than 120 farmers attended the programme.
MCP CSR get a pat on the back
Mejia Cement Plant (MCP) organised their annual CSR felicitation programme which was graced by Dr. Uma Sankar S, IAS – District Magistrate (DM), Bankura along with other guests Mr. Susanta Kr Basu, Block Development Officer, Mr. Joyasurya Chakraborty, Joint Block Development Officer, Gangajal Ghati Block and Dr. Deep Samanta, Block Medical Health Officer, Amarkanan. During this event, a brief session was conducted to showcase Nuvoco’s CSR initiatives and an opportunity to hear from the beneficiaries themselves about the positive impact of these initiatives on their lives. Later, a skit on public health and hygiene was presented by the school children of the Benagari Government Primary School to create awareness amongst all present.
‘Lunch with Panch’
With the objective of maintaining a cordial relationship with the stakeholders and initiating an open discussion for overall development of plant and its surroundings, Sonadih Cement Plant has started a meeting cum lunch titled ‘Lunch with Panch’ with the Sarpanch and Panch of nearby villages. Ramesh Warke, SVP – SCP along with Kiran Sharma, Cluster Head – P&A welcomed all the guests. Later blood donation awareness session was conducted and management has appealed for their contribution in creating awareness among villagers.
Construction of school boundary wall
Under Nuvoco’s ‘Nirmaan Bharat’ initiative; Arasmeta Cement Plant (ACP) constructed approximately 80 meters of boundary wall at Sonsari village school.
Community hall constructed by ACP
Under Nirman Bharat initiative and also for the overall development in surrounding villages; Arasmeta Cement Plant (ACP) has constructed community hall at village Latiya Pakariya. The community hall was constructed as per Panchayat proposal. Altogether 110 village households are going to benefit from this initiative.
SMART class training to teachers
Under Sakshar Bharat initiative a training program on SMART class education was organized by Arasmeta Cement Plant (ACP) at village Amora and Parsada. The training was conducted with the support of NGO Next Education which is working to bring about a systemic change to Indian education by utilizing technology. Teachers from class I to XII participated in the training program and appreciated the new model of technology.
MCP CSR program visited by new MD
After taking the helm, Jayakumar Krishnaswamy, new Managing Director, Nuvoco during his recent visit to Mejia Cement Plant also visited the CSR programs. During his visit, he interacted with the project beneficiaries of different programs and came to know how the CSR interventions have changed their social and economical stature. He also appreciated the efforts and urged the beneficiaries to involve and take more benefits out of these programs. He saw different field level interventions like mushroom shed, vegetable garden and vermin compost pit of the beneficiaries.
ACP constructed cultural stage
Arasmeta Cement Plant (ACP) under Nirmaan Bharat initiative constructed cemented cultural stage at Chorbhatti village (Kirari Mines). The purpose of this initiative is to provide a platform where all the school students can connect and display their histrionic skills.
MCP promotes village level custom hiring centre
Under Nuvoco’s Saksham Bharat program, Mejia Cement Plant (MCP) has promoted the concept and practice of mechanized farming for kharif crop in different villages. The mechanized interventions brings in benefits in terms of timeliness and precision to agricultural operations besides greater field coverage over a short period, cost-effectiveness, efficiency in use of resources and applied inputs, preservation of available soil moisture under stress conditions and provision of adequate drainage and conservation of excess rain and floodwaters for the farmers. A custom hiring centre for farm implements is being promoted in different villages through self help groups.
Inauguration of Kitchen Shed under SCP, CSR
Under Nuvoco’s CSR Initiative of Sakshar Bharat, SCP constructed a kitchen shed and a classroom for a school in the nearby Medh village. Local MLA Shri Janak Ram Verma and other Panchayat representatives inaugurated the kitchen shed in the presence of Mr. Bharat Soni, Sr. Manager P&A, SCP and appreciated the support extended by the plant.
Medical Check-up for DAV Public School by SCP
SCP organised a medical check-up for students of 9th to 12th standards of DAV Public School. In all, 225 students were examined at SCP’s Sanjeevani Health Centre and were provided medical counselling by the Medical team. The principal of the school appreciated this noble initiative, which also enabled them to meet the CBSE guidelines.
Positive Thinking Session at DAV School, Sonadih
SCP organised a session on Positive Thinking by Bramhakumari for the staff of DAV School. The objective was to provide access to strategies on positive thinking, incorporate them in one’s day-to-day life, and also overcome negative patterns that have prevented one from achieving goals in the past. Mr. Kiran Sharma, AVP, P&A also attended the session and motivated the teachers.
Dengue and Malaria Preventive Medical Camp by CCP
A medical camp was organized by CCP to prevent mosquito-borne diseases like Dengue and Malaria through homeopathic medicines at the Occupational Health Centre. Total 140 doses were dispensed to Nuvoco employees and their family members.
MCP started supplementary education centre
Under Sakshar Bharat program, Mejia Cement Plant (MCP) has started a supplementary education centre for primary school children at Kenthulia village. Based on a need assessment study and request from the community to provide better education to the children this initiative was rolled out. A number of community meetings were also organised on how to run the supplementary education centre successfully. Apart from regular coaching, parents meeting and evaluation the centre will be monitored by the community. Parents are ready for partial contribution for their children’s education in a whole hearted manner. Most of the children covered in the program belong to underprivileged communities.
Support for sports activities
To encourage sports activities amongst the villagers; Arasmeta Cement Plant (ACP) supported Amora village in developing a cricket ground. The CSR team supported by providing necessary help in leveling the uneven cricket ground and making it suitable for playing.
ACP imparts smart class training
Under Sakshar Bharat initiative, Arasmeta Cement Plant (ACP) organised smart class training program at KPS School. The training was conducted with the support of Next Education NGO which is working to bring about a systemic change in Indian education by utilizing technology. Teachers from Class I to XII participated in the program and appreciated the new model of technology.
Renovation of school toilets
Arasmeta Cement Plant (ACP) under “Swastha Bharat” initiative renovated the toilets at Amora village. The purpose of this initiative is to provide better sanitation, cleanliness and health & hygiene to children and especially girls.
MCP promotes organic pesticides
Under Nuvoco’s Saksham Bharat program, Mejia Cement Plant (MCP) organised different training activities on using organic pesticides for the optimization of ecological functions such as biological pest control, to replace agrochemical inputs in crops in different villages. Training and on the farm demonstration were imparted on preparation and applications of the organic pesticides and plant organic vitamins. These organic pesticides are prepared from Neem leaves, cow urine, cow dung, tobacco leaves, onions, garlic, chillies, and others.
Inauguration of smart learning class
Jojobera Cement Plant (JCP) inaugurated smart learning classes at Rajkiyekrit Jamshedpur Girls High School. JCP has provided full audio – visual learning system in two Government Schools – Rajkiyekrit Jamshedpur Balika Uchh Vidyalaya, Sakchi and Bistupur. A smart classroom is equipped with computer, big touch screen board and other audio-visual equipments which help the teacher in teaching his students using a variety of media. All the subjects for different classes are uploaded in the system.
Awareness on environment in villages
As part of CSR program an awareness session on environment was organised in villages around Sonadih Cement Plant (SCP). All women Self Help Group (SHG) members and girls participated in the event. They were made aware about management of plastic waste and how burning of crop residue lead to air pollution.
JCP organised health checkup camp
As part of Nuvoco’s Swasth Bharat initiative, Jojobera Cement Plant (JCP) organised health checkup camp at Damka Sai village. Total 118 patients were examined by the doctors and provided with free medicines. The doctors also made locals aware about their health problems.
Pond digging at Kirari village ACP
Under Nuvoco’s Nirman Bharat initiative, Kirari Mines under Arasmeta Cement Plant (ACP) started restoring the exiting water bodies at village level wherein pond deepen
